Things to Do in Watamu: A First-Timer’s Guide

Marine park snorkelling, Mida Creek, the Gede Ruins and a canyon that glows at sunset: the best of Watamu, and how to fit it around a beach stay.

Watamu is a small town with a big coastline. White beaches, a protected marine park and a tidal creek full of birds sit within a few minutes of each other, which makes it one of the easiest places in Kenya to mix lazy days with real adventures. Here is where to start.

Swim and snorkel in Watamu Marine Park

The coral gardens of Watamu Marine National Park lie just off the beaches. A glass-bottom boat or a snorkelling trip shows you reef fish, turtles and, with a little luck, dolphins in the channel. The easiest way to see it all in one day is a Safari Blue dhow trip.

Explore Mida Creek

Behind the town, Mida Creek is a wide tidal inlet edged with mangroves. At low tide it draws flocks of wading birds; at high tide it is perfect for a dhow or a kayak. Sunset over the creek is one of the quiet highlights of the coast.

Walk through the Gede Ruins

A few minutes inland, the ruins of Gede are the remains of a Swahili town hidden in the coastal forest: mosques, a palace and houses of coral stone, with monkeys moving through the trees above them.

Watch the sunset at Marafa

Further north, the sandstone canyon of Marafa, known as Hell’s Kitchen, turns red, orange and white as the sun goes down. Go in the late afternoon and stay for the light.

Go on safari

Watamu is close enough to Tsavo East for a two-day safari: leave in the morning, spend the afternoon and the next dawn on game drives, and be back by the pool the following evening.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Watamu?

Four or five days lets you mix beach time with a dhow trip, the Gede Ruins and Marafa; a week leaves room for a two-day Tsavo safari.

Is Watamu good for snorkelling?

Yes. Watamu Marine National Park protects coral gardens just off the beaches, and dhow trips stop at the best spots.

Can TAWI arrange excursions?

Yes. We work with our partner Dreaming Kenya to arrange safaris, dhow trips, Gede and Marafa, and private transfers.
