One of Kenya’s hidden gems
North-west of Malindi, the land suddenly drops into the Marafa Depression, a canyon of eroded sandstone pillars and ridges. Locals call it Nyari, “the place broken by itself”; visitors know it as Hell’s Kitchen, for the way the rock seems to burn in the afternoon heat.
The best time to see it is at sunset, when the walls turn red, orange, pink and white. A local guide walks you down into the canyon and tells the legends behind it, then you climb back up to watch the colours change from the rim.
