Step back in time
Hidden in the forest just inland from Watamu, Gede was a thriving Swahili town for several hundred years before it was abandoned. Today its coral-stone mosques, palace, houses and pillar tomb stand among giant baobabs and tamarind trees, with monkeys moving through the canopy above.
A guide walks you through the town and its history — the trade that made it rich, and the mystery of why everyone left — and there is a small museum at the entrance.
It is close enough to combine with a morning on the beach or an afternoon at the pool.
